Valle delle Ferriere (Papermills Valley)


Valle delle Ferriere hike is a beautiful historical walk in the valley between Scala and Amalfi.

There you can admire ruins of 14th Century Paper Mills  and admire a prehistoric fern called

Woodwardia radicans.

The name Ferriere comes from a foundry, sited into the middle of the Valley, used to produce iron for the region.

There are 2 options for this tour:

 

  1. Easy- a nice hike to the lower side of Valle delle Ferriere, also called Valle dei Mulini, suitable for families, (kids friendly) or people who don’t want to do a challenging hike but love to enjoy Nature and History.

The tour starts from the Medieval Village of Pontone and ends in Amalfi.

At the end of the hike we can admire the beautiful lemon yards of Amalfi and there is a possibility

to visit the Paper Museum (an ancient paper mill that has been converted into a museum) where you

can experience how to create paper as it was made in the past.

After the Museum, we can do a  walk into the beautiful town of Amalfi and a stop to taste

sfogliatella or delizia , the famous pastries of the Amalfi Coast and Naples.

Duration: 3 hrs

Distance: about 5 km

Best time to go: Morning or evening

Suggestion: we can stop for a special organic salad or a lemon juice into a Farm inside the valley

It is Possible to combine this hike with a walking tour of Amalfi and Ravello

 

  1. Average- Challenging- this walk is for experienced hikers. It’s a hike along the Upper Side of Valle delle ferriere and it passes through waterfalls. We can admire Amalfi from above but we need to be really careful as tehre are some dangerous sections with cliffs. This hike starts from the Medieval Village of Pontone and ends in Pogerola.

At the end of this hike we can stop into a very nice restaurant and if you are brave enough we can walk down to Amalfi through an old Muletrack.

Best time to go: Morning or early evening.

 

Sandals, ballerinas, sneakers, moccasins and every kind of slippery shoes are strictly forbidden.
