According to the popular legend, the Byzantine Icon reached Positano in the year 1159. The icon belonged to the cargo of a sailing ship that was stopped by a dead calm. The sailors tried to continue sailing but unsuccessful. Then they heard a voice saying “Posa Posa” that means “stop me here”. The captain understood that the voice came from the Virgin and he decided to leave the Icon to the inhabitants of Positano. Right then the ship began to sail again and the sailors stopped the Icon in Positano. The ihabitants of the town decided to chose the Virgin as their patron.
Every year in Positano we celebrate the coming of the Virgin and many people suppose that the origin of the name “Positano” derives from this legend.
